Program Overview

Consultants offering services to nonprofit boards need to share experiences with others engaged in similar work and to ponder challenging ideas about nonprofit leadership and organization dynamics. This training will focus on both key governance topics as well as the challenges faced by the individual as a governance consultant working with nonprofit organizations.

Among the topics covered in the program are:

  • Drivers of change in nonprofit governance
  • Emerging issues and trends
  • Dealing with conflict on boards
  • How to help boards work better and smarter
  • Competencies of effective boards
  • Thinking and planning strategically
  • How to help boards manage change
  • Ethics in governance
  • Strengthening one's own consulting skills

Course Objectives

The curriculum of this professional development program is designed to serve two purposes:

  1. to share insights and materials that BoardSource has developed during its work with hundreds of nonprofit boards and thousands of board and senior staff members, and
  2. to promote peer interaction and sharing of information and experience brought by participants.

Registration is limited. Attendance is recommended for:

  • Consultants, trainers, management assistance providers, directors of training, or field staff from national organizations who offer their services to nonprofit boards AND have been serving this role for at least 5 years.
  • Graduates of at least one other BoardSource Practitioner Program (Critical Components of Effective Governance or Assessment of Governing Boards and Chief Executives).
