To receive the Certificate, you must earn 12 Nonprofit Board Education (NBE) credits, which may be achieved in the following ways:
- Participate in “Critical Components of Effective Governance,” a live training offered at the annual BoardSource Leadership Forum and at several other times throughout the year in Washington, D.C., and other locations. (12 NBE credits).
- Participate in three BoardSource Digital Classroom trainings. These trainings are on-demand, online.
- Effective Board Leadership Today: Understanding Nonprofit Board Service

- Financial and Legal Oversight and Risk Management
(4 NBE credits – In development – Required)
- Board Structure and Practices

- “Grandfather” option. If you have participated in “Critical Components of Nonprofit Governance” within the past two years, you will, upon completion of the requirements stated below, be awarded a Certificate of Board Education.
Get Started
To become a Certificate holder, you must register your credits with the BoardSource registrar. Upon completion of 12 credits, BoardSource will send you the Certificate of Board Education and enter your name into the Registry.
BoardSource will inform individuals who are “grandfathered” of their eligibility for the Certificate. We then will mail them their Certificate and enter their names into the Registry.
